UNEP Announces Call for Nominations for the Prestigious Champions of the Earth Award.
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking nominations for the esteemed Champions of the Earth award, the UN’s highest environmental honor. This year’s theme centers on solutions for land restoration, drought resilience, and combating desertification.
Aligning with Global Initiatives
This call for nominations coincides with the critical halfway point of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and precedes World Environment Day on June 5th, 2024, which will spotlight land restoration efforts. The urgency to restore and revive ecosystems is paramount, as it directly benefits human well-being, reduces poverty, and strengthens resilience against extreme weather events while mitigating climate change.
Who Can Be Nominated?
The award recognizes outstanding leadership across various sectors, including government, civil society, and the private sector. Categories for nomination encompass Policy Leadership, Inspiration and Action, Entrepreneurial Vision, and Science and Innovation.
Nomination Period and Recognition
Nominations are open to the public from April 15th to May 5th, 2024. The esteemed Champions of the Earth will be announced later this year.
