Judge of the High Court Of Kenya – 5 Posts

  • Law / Legal 

Duties and Responsibilities

For appointment to the position of Judge of the High Court, the applicant must possess the following minimum qualifications set out in Article 166 (2) (a), (b)and (c) as read with Sub Article (5) (a) (b) and (c) of the Constitution, namely:

  • Unlimited original jurisdiction in criminal and civil matters;
  • Jurisdiction to determine the question whether a right or fundamental freedom in the Bill of Rights has been denied, violated, infringed or threatened;
  • Jurisdiction to hear an appeal from a decision of a tribunal appointed under the Constitution to consider the removal of a person from office, other than a tribunal appointed under Article 144;
  • Jurisdiction to hear any question respecting the interpretation of the Constitution including the determination of—
  • The question whether any law is inconsistent with or in contravention of the Constitution;
  • The question whether anything said to be done under the authority of the Constitution or of any law is inconsistent with, or in contravention of, the Constitution;
  • Any matter relating to constitutional powers of State organs in respect of county governments and any matter relating to the constitutional relationship between the levels of government; and
  • A question relating to conflict of laws under Article 191; and
  • Any other jurisdiction, original or appellate, conferred on it by legislation.
  • Supervisory jurisdiction over the subordinate courts and over any person, body or authority exercising a judicial or quasijudicial function, but not over a superior court.

Requirements

A Judge of the High Court shall serve in the High Court of Kenya. The function and jurisdiction of the Court is provided for under Article 165 (3) and (7), namely:

  •  Hold a law degree from a recognized university, or be an advocate of the High Court of Kenya, or possess an equivalent qualification in a Commonlaw jurisdiction;
  •  Have at least ten (10) years’ experience as a superior court judge or a professionally qualified magistrate; or
  •  Have at least ten (10) years’ experience as a distinguished academic, or legal practitioner or such experience in other relevant legal field;
  •  Have held the qualifications specified in paragraphs 2 (a) and (b) above for a period amounting, in the aggregate, to ten (10) years; and
  • Possess the experience required under paragraph 2 (a), (b) and (c) above as applicable, irrespective of whether that experience was gained in Kenya or in another Commonwealth CommonLaw jurisdiction; and
  •  Have a high moral character, integrity, and impartiality (meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution on Leadership and Integrity).

In addition, the applicants should demonstrate a high degree of professional competence, communication skills, fairness, good temperament, good judgment, wide breath of both legal and life experience and demonstrable commitment to public and community service.

The appointment shall be made in accordance with Article 166 (1)(b), (2) and (5) of the 2010 Constitution and Section 30, Part V and the First Schedule of the Judicial Service Act, No. 1 of 2011.

Judge of the Court of Appeal – 11 Posts

National Programs Coordinator

ROLE OVERVIEW:

The National Youth Programs Coordinator supports the National Youth Manager to plan, coordinate, and oversee project officers for various programs or projects under the Youth Development Department.  Furthermore, the National Youth Programs Coordinator ensures the project budget and records pertaining to the project expenditures are maintained, supports implementation of policies and procedures, and organizes the activities and agenda for the projects.

SCOPE OF ROLE:

  • Budget responsibility: None.
  • Other key working contacts: Program Managers, Coordinators & Officers – Disaster Management, Health and Social Services, Protection Gender and Inclusion, Regions, Counties, Partner National Societies, other agencies, Logistics, Finance and Procurement.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

Program Management 

  • Assist with planning and coordinating of projects/ programs and their activities.
  • Work to keep projects/ programs on schedule, within stated budgets and functioning smoothly
  • Support program growth and development as necessary.
  • Coordinate projects/ programs internal communications.
  • Manage project officers’ work assignments, workloads, and work schedules.
  • Administer or organize fund raising operations for programs.

PERSON SPECIFICATIONS:
Academic Qualification

  • Bachelor’s degree in any Social Sciences, Development Studies, Sociology, Public Administration and Management or related field.

Professional Qualifications/ Experience

  • At least 2 years’ experience in program management and youth development work.
  • Experience working with international donors and development partners like the USAID, Red Cross Movement, European Union, UN Agencies etc.

Road Safety Advocacy Officer

Job Summary

Reporting to the National Youth Manager(KRCS Road Safety Focal Point)  and technically working with the Policy, Advocacy and Governance Advisor, the post-holder will provide direct assistance to KRCS at the head office in Nairobi. The Officer will support the implementation of the Safe Urban Roads and Areas (SURA-K) aimed at influencing and advocating for the amendment of the speed limit legislations in Kenya.

Duty Station

  • S/he will be based at the Kenya Red Cross Headquarters, in Nairobi, with frequent travel to the field as necessary.

Key responsibilities:

  • Champion the key road safety policy messages emerging form the activities under the SURA-K Project
  • With the Program Manager and Policy, Advocacy and Governance Advisor, lead KRCS engagement with government and civil society organizations working on road safety.
  • Monitor Kenya’s road safety initiatives/ activities and identify opportunities for advancing rod safety.
  • With support from the Program Manager, lead the dissemination and advocacy of research / survey outputs from the Project activities.
  • Develop campaign briefings and related materials.
  • Contribute to consultation responses and road safety policy developments.
  • Work in collaboration with the Program Manager, Communications Officer and Policy, Advocacy and Governance Advisor
  • Support in planning and coordination of stakeholders’ engagement activities in Nairobi County
  • Assistance with KRCS events and other related tasks.
  • Ensure activities under the project are in schedule as per the approved work-plans and timelines.
  • Schedule, plan and organize project-related meetings and events with the support of the Program Manager
  • Maintain activity records, reports, presentations, and proposals.
  • Collect and highlight success stories with the support of the communications team.
  • Facilitate in-person workshops to participants from the Road Safety organizations/ institutions.
  • Mobilize stakeholders to take part in the workshops, consultation meetings, and any other activities under the project.
  • Support logistics coordination for workshops and activities e.g. hotel bookings, purchase requests etc.
  • Identify and mitigate any potential risks to the project with support from the Program Manager
  • Perform other roles that may be assigned to you by the line manager
