Kenya Grapples with Devastating Floods: Over 70 Dead, 131,000 Displaced
Heavy rains across Kenya have triggered widespread flooding, resulting in a significant humanitarian crisis. As of April 26th, 2024, official reports indicate at least 70 fatalities and over 131,000 people displaced from their homes.
National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) Issues Directive
In response to the ongoing crisis, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has issued a directive to county governments. This directive emphasizes preventative measures, urging counties to clear blocked storm drains and remove any structures obstructing water flow. NEMA cites Section 13 of the Sustainable Waste Management Act 2022, highlighting the need to address drainage issues caused by waste accumulation and illegal constructions. The aim is to mitigate environmental damage and prevent further public health risks associated with flooding. NEMA’s directive also extends to companies adhering to Extended Producer Responsibility regulations, urging them to minimize waste discharge during periods of heavy rainfall.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued warnings of potential landslides in several regions due to the relentless downpours. Areas of particular concern include the slopes of Mt. Kenya, the Aberdare Ranges, and Western Kenya. Despite ongoing efforts, the Meteorological Department forecasts continued heavy rainfall across the country, with Nairobi, Kisumu, and Narok anticipated to experience the brunt of the precipitation. These forecasts raise concerns about potential disruptions to daily life and further flooding.
The Kenyan government is actively working to mitigate the impact of the flooding. President William Ruto has directed the National Youth Service (NYS) to establish temporary shelters for those affected by floods, with priority given to residents in landslide-prone areas. The Kenya Red Cross Society continues to conduct rescue operations for individuals stranded in floodwaters. To enhance public awareness and preparedness, the government has pledged to issue daily flood alerts nationwide. Additionally, a multi-agency center has been activated to coordinate the national response and effectively manage the crisis.
