CEMASTEA Strengthens STEM Education in Kenyan Junior Secondary Schools Through Teacher Training.
The Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA) is implementing a comprehensive training program to equip Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers with the necessary pedagogical skills and content knowledge for effective Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education delivery under the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).
This targeted initiative aims to enhance the capacity of 9,639 JSS teachers, specifically those specializing in pre-technical studies, agriculture, and nutrition. The training focuses on equipping educators with learner-centered pedagogical strategies to foster student engagement and develop critical skills required for success in the STEM pathway during Senior School.
To ensure nationwide reach, CEMASTEA is employing a cascade training model. An initial cohort of 292 county trainers will undergo intensive training. These trainers will then disseminate their acquired knowledge and skills to JSS teachers across all 47 Kenyan counties.
The training program encompasses several key areas:
- Curriculum Expertise: JSS teachers will gain a thorough understanding of and proficiency in interpreting the CBC curriculum designs developed by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD).
- Learner-Centered Pedagogy: The program emphasizes the implementation of learner-centered teaching approaches that encourage active student participation and the development of essential skills.
- Digital Literacy Integration: A critical focus is placed on equipping educators with the ability to effectively integrate digital literacy and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) into their teaching practices to enhance learning outcomes.
This strategic initiative aligns seamlessly with the Kenyan government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). By establishing a strong foundation in STEM education, the program aims to:
- Bridge educational inequalities and create a level playing field for all learners.
- Equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive in the dynamic 21st century environment.
- Promote the effective use of technology in classrooms to improve learning experiences and outcomes.
The Ministry of Education acknowledges the current challenges associated with integrating technology effectively in classrooms. They view CEMASTEA’s training program as a potential transformative solution for enhancing teaching and learning practices in JSS STEM education.
